I’ve just started a new topic on my forum about the state of the music industry from the musicians’ and artists’ perspectives: contributions welcome.

Hi , just saw this and remembered there is a really interesting lecture on you tube, It is by a drummer called Bill Bruford ( Malmoe lecture) and it is called a creative musician in a commercial world some of you may find it interesting i hope.
    Best wishes Steve

Well where do you start. A & R people who wouldn’t know a good band or artist even if they were told which is good or bad. The inability to take a risk with an artist. Don’t just drop an artist because there first song was not a hit in the first week. What we need is another punk thing, not punk but a modern version. All the independent labels eventually sold out. A part from all that i have not got a clue.

As this is from the musicians’ perspective, I suspect I’m not really qualified to contribute, but……

In response to criticism of A&R people – I was one many years ago and I can assure you that when your job is entirely dependent on your decisions, it puts an entirely different perspective on what is acceptable risk. So it might help writers/artists/musicians to remember the guy who is listening to his music has a mortgage to pay and children to feed.
